“For the past three years I have had weekly training sessions at Activation Fitness in Glenview. Gina Narducci is my trainer, and she has been key in helping me regain real physical health and strength. The owner of Activation Fitness, Steve Dam, has created an atmosphere of both fun and challenge. I highly recommend Activation Fitness.”

“I have been working with Steve at Activation Fitness for over 2 years now and he has really helped identify my weak muscle areas and make them stronger. When I first started, I was having a lot of back and shoulder pain and some restricted range of motion. Through the MAT techniques, we were able to eliminate the pain and expand my range of motion. I now have to rely much less on the MAT Techniques and can spend more time strengthening my muscles and keeping my body pain free. It has made a huge difference in my quality of life.”

“If you’re looking for a customized fitness program with an experienced, compassionate, and knowledgeable professional to support your athletic or healthy living goals, help you reclaim strength and mobility post stroke or orthopedic rehab, or accelerate your return to pre-pregnancy fitness, look no further. The friendly trainers at Activation Fitness–a private studio in Glenview with its own parking lot–are the real deal.
In particular, I can’t say enough good things about Mary Nimrod, my personal trainer. For the past 15 years or so she has helped keep me strong and balanced by focusing on core strength and injury avoidance. And because she’s so knowledgeable and stays current with the latest health and fitness research, she’s always finding new ways to mix things up to challenge and strengthen my body. In a given session with traditional gym machines, for example, she might also incorporate elements of Pilates or yoga for core work, balance, and flexibility, boxing for strength and cardiovascular endurance, and sport-specific drills to support my tennis habit. Another session we might use free weights, medicine balls, TRX, stability ball, bosu, or bands. Mary is also a great listener who is attuned to the mind-body connection. I highly recommend her!
Full disclosure: The studio doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of one of the “big box” gyms–you won’t find a juice bar here, or fancy locker rooms–but that’s kind of the point. Owner Steve Dam has created something much better.”

“Steve has done an exceptional job at motivating me to increase my strength and flexibility. He also helped my daughter with specific exercises that would improve her performance on Team USA. He works with my husband on weight-loss goals. Steve focuses on correct form and uses his MAT techniques when needed to alleviate any pain issues. We have each seen positive results. I highly recommend Activation Fitness!”

“A big thank you to Activation Fitness for their work on my son’s injured ankle. During yesterday’s football game, he caught a pass and cut across the field to outrace everyone for an 80-yard score. He followed it up with another 55 yard run that got called back. His ankle seems to fully recovered and his leg is stronger than ever!”

“I have been going to Steve now regularly for about 3 months and have seen significant improvement. He worked with me to identify weak muscle areas and to strengthen them so that I’ve seen improvement in physical activities. Fitness and sports performance are important to me and Steve has zeroed in on the areas that need strengthening so that I can optimize my activities. His MAT technique makes a lot of sense and has worked well for me!”

“I have been training with Gina for about 6 months. The first work out was an adjustment, but I already knew I had a lot of work to do. Since then, I have lost about 20 pounds and feel a lot stronger and more balanced. My endurance has greatly improved as well as my ability to move in most ways. In between sessions, I am pretty consistent with working out by myself and my training sessions with her have helped me continue to progress. She has a really positive attitude that helps me out of low points on my way to achieving my fitness goals. Gina’s workouts are filled with variety. She keeps the work outs interesting by presenting new exercises that push my body to new limits. She is high energy, friendly and provides just the right level of motivation to keep me going when I feel like stopping. Her work outs are difficult and she is persistent about getting me to push myself. I am not into the “boot camp” style and Gina is the right mix of tough and supportive that I need to keep coming back to her. ”

“My daughter is a collegiate runner who worked with Steve to improve her running form and address the injuries that prevented her from finishing her cross country season. Steve worked with her busy schedule, addressed her muscle weaknesses and gave her exercises to work on between visits. She’s back to running pain free and her form is more fluid than it’s ever been.”

“I started coming to Activation Fitness when I had some nagging knee pain. I wanted to get ready for a ski trip and searched on line for something effective and non-invasive. After just a few sessions of MAT, my knees were pain free. It really was a Godsend. I was impressed enough to encourage my mom to start coming. She had several car accidents and had become much less active with increasing pain and tightness. She started with some MAT but now does strength training mostly and has been a regular client for a couple years. It has changed her life and she can now enjoy active exercise and walks regularly without pain for first time in years. Now I even convinced my dad to start coming in finally for a chronic shoulder issue.. he was skeptical but is seeing some big increase in his strength and flexibility. He is finally starting to sleep better at night and feeling optimistic again about the golf season coming up!

“I am a professional violinist and sustained an injury almost 20 years ago to my neck that caused continuous pain. Over the years I saw physical therapists, sports medicine doctors, chiropractors, and a napropath-despite months and years of therapy the pain had never receded until my current trainer recommended MAT and Activation Fitness over 3 years ago. It has changed my life completely. After a few initial weeks of extensive therapy I am now on a flexible schedule with appointments when needed. I am able to practice, teach and workout on a regular basis and even play competitive tennis-things I could never have achieved together prior to Activation Fitness.”

“I’m a retired general surgeon, after 40 years of being bent over the operating table and having no real physical therapy or exercise, I have encountered many problems with my shoulder and my back. All of these problems were greatly helped by MAT and strength training. My mobility and strength were greatly improved and pain has decreased significantly. Now I am looking forward to many years of healthy golf. I highly recommend Activation Fitness and believe you should start early taking care of your body, not late like I did.”

“I have been a Physician Assistant for over 16 years. Working 12-14 hour shifts and having 5 children has not been terribly kind to my body. Over the past few years, I have experienced more back pain, muscle spasms, radiating thigh/leg pains, and even chest wall and shoulder pains. Being in my early 40’s, I was frustrated. I started working hard to get my body back in shape. I lost some weight and started doing exercise videos and stretching exercises recommended by traditional therapists. While my strength was improving some, it honestly seemed the more I stretched, the more pain I felt. My progress was slow. Recently I started working with Steve Dam. His methods of “muscle activation” and strengthening were unique from what I had learned in the past. However, he showed me where my body had specific weaknesses and how they have been preventing me from achieving my goals. Activating the muscles and strengthening them in a healthy way makes sense scientifically and has been much more effective and efficient than traditional work outs. I am getting stronger, moving easier and experiencing much less pain. I have even started running for the first time in my life! I am feeling better and learning a lot about muscle health and maintenance. I still have some work to do, but I am confident my body is now on the right track.”
— Kim Ackert PA-C
“Steve and Activation Fitness are the best! I started going to Steve many years ago for a herniated disk,. I didn’t want to have surgery if possible so I worked with Steve and through MAT and careful strength training he helped me get off pain medication and strengthen the muscles around the injury. I continued to go to Steve for the next 10 years and as my constant strength coach he has helped me through the other injuries I encountered over the years. Whether it be a bad knee (from volleyball) or a complete physical rehab after heart valve replacement, Steve talked to my Doctors, researched what waSs the safest way to approach physical rehabilitation, measured my progress and encouraged me to keep working. I would never have seen the progress I have experienced without Steve and Activation Fitness.”
—Janet Sontag
“For years I had been trying to gain muscle strength and tone while losing weight. I had tried working with many personal trainers before Steve with no results. Steve was able to get me on track and I started to see real results. Steve is very knowledgeable about how to work with someone to get results and get them to push themselves as far as they can while never pushing someone too far so they injure themselves or feel like giving up. He is very attuned to how a person is feeling and is able to adjust the workouts to suit their present needs.”
— Randi Feiger
“I just came up the hill from swimming in my pool. 5 years ago this was not a big deal, but for the past 4 years I just couldn’t do it without falling and hurting myself. Since MAT with Steve, I can do all sorts of things I couldn’t do for years and had given up doing ever again…like going down to my basement. Couldn’t do stairs. I keep trying to tell everyone I know how well MAT works but they are very skeptical. Obviously my improvement is not enough for them…but my grand kids think it is great since I can swim with them again! Anyway, I’ll keep spreading the word, but I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for giving me my life back.”
— Jacque Sherman
“Steve Dam is a student for life. He has demonstrated a commitment to becoming the best MAT Certified Specialist he can be. He is a pleasure to work for as well. When I wanted to find a new place to work at, Activation Fitness was an outstanding fit because of the ethics, equipment, and most importantly, Steve.”

“Muscle Activation Techniques is the cornerstone for my physical therapy practice. The MAT biomechanically based evaluation and treatment methodology has allowed me to improve my patients short and long-term outcomes by specifically addressing faulty biomechanics, restoring muscle(s) recruitment firing pattern, educating the patient on the MAT philosophy, and customizing a patient’s exercise program based on MAT findings.”

“As a senior it is all about staying in the game. One of my games is golf. At Activation Fitness, I use a regiment of training and MAT. The training has allowed me to maintain my strength and the MAT has provided stability throughout my range of motion. Having stability and motion are keys to the golf swing. My strength allows me to compete on the course with much younger players.”

“I am a weekend warrior who participates in competitive tennis, golf and paddle tennis. Competitive sports has always been an integral part of my life. Over the years, I have suffered from chronic lower back. Determined to find relief, I researched and was willing to try everything determined not to have surgery. I was diagnosed with partially herniated and bulging discs. The usual was subscribed, drugs and rest. Through my research I found that many people if given an MRI would show similar skeletal issues, but not all suffer from back pain. The key to the problem was not always skeletal, but muscular. Following this theory lead me to M.A.T. in 2007. M.A.T. treats our muscular imbalances. I gave it a try that year and notice remarkable results. I was able to once again participate in competitive sports. By making M.A.T. part of my regular weekly routine, I have noticed less frequent incidents of back pain and the reduction in duration and severity of each episode. It has also enabled my muscles to function in their full capacity allowing my back a greater range of motion, thus translating to a more powerful golf swing.
M.A.T. has given me an opportunity to reclaim my quality of life back and for that I will always be grateful. I am a true believer in the benefits of M.A.T. If you are seeking relief from muscle pain, lack of range of movement and/ or want to reach your full athletic potential, I highly recommend the treatment.”

“I’m 48 and a lifelong runner. I developed plantar fasciitisseveral months ago and I was desperate for help. A friend suggested I try MAT and recommended Steve Dam. I was a bit surprised when Steve spent the entire session working on my ‘good’ side, hardly even touching my painful foot. After several sessions with Steve, doing my exercises and following his advice, I have completely changed the way I look at therapy, stretching, and the way my body works in general. I am back to running again pain free and feel even less susceptible to injury now!”
— Maggie Mohr
“I met Steve in February at a Road Runner Sports event. After a short demonstration of the Muscle Activation Technique and quick evaluation of my issues, I immediately knew that I needed their help. There was an increase in muscle strength after just 5 minutes of work. I was stunned! I was suffering from high hamstring tendonitis and as a runner this severely limited my ability to run hills. After only 4 sessions I was able to run a very challenging hilly 25k with no issues or pain. I continue to work with Steve and continue to see improvements and have been able to run pain free all summer. I would highly recommend Activation Fitness and MAT to anyone.”
— Kathy Wasicki
“I am a 15 year old varsity distance runner. I started having tightness and pain last track season which I was told was IT band tightness. At the start of my cross-country season I developed pain in my knee and hip which caused me to stop training. MAT with Steve Dam has helped me gain flexibility and strength in my hips, knees and ankles. I feel stronger after my session and this carries over to help me run faster. With every session I see progress and understand more about how my body works.”

“Thank you for your comments regarding my recent success at the Ironman World 70.3 Triathlon Championships. I attribute a great deal of my success to the work you and the MAT technique has done for my overall strength and stability. Over the past few years I have been wrought with a myriad of physical problems ranging from sciatica to lower back pain. This seemed to just send me spiraling downward and resulted in further knee and hip issues. After years, I felt like no one was able to get to the true root of my injuries. As an athlete who loved to race and compete in Marathons and various distance triathlons, I was more than frustrated. I had goals. I didn’t feel like slowing down. And, I wanted answers.
When we first met, I have to admit I was grasping at straws; looking for someone to put the pieces together. I was in the midst of an incredibly successful racing season. I had just competed and placed in four half ironmans over the summer. This earned me the honor of racing at World’s in November but, my body was breaking down. After a quick painless evaluation you were able to identify weaknesses and limitations. This led to reactivating weak muscles and opening up limited joint movements. Each time we met I noticed dramatic results. For example, the first session we were able to successfully increase the rotation and motion of my right hip. All of a sudden I noticed a marked reduction in hip pain and an increase in overall strength. Over the next few sessions we relieved SI pain, strengthened tweeky knees and, stabilized limited ankle rotations. The bottom line is that not only did I compete at World’s but, set an all time PR (personal best) and placed 6th.
I want to thank Activation Fitness immensely for opening my eyes to the benefits of MAT. And, I look forward to keeping you in my armamentarium of long term strategies that will keep me healthy, strong and racing for years to come. My enthusiasm for what you do is apparent by all the referrals that I have and will continue to send your way.”

“MAT at Activation Fitness helped me fully recover from two traumatic hip fractures. Two freak accidents resulted in two separate femoral neck fractures just below my hip joint.
The first injury was done in New Zealand where I had a plate and screws put in. After a few months of therapy, I returned to the US. I knew something still wasn’t right with my mechanics. Prior to the accident, I had been a highly competitive endurance athlete. MAT was able to uncover some compensations traditional therapy was not able to address or even fully recognize. After a handful of sessions, I felt much more in balance and my gait was smoother with minimal discomfort.
After a full recovery, a couple years later I was in a bicycle accident which fractured nearly the same spot on the other leg. This time I wanted to use MAT even in the very beginning stages of therapy. I came to Activation Fitness two weeks after surgery. The early rehab was very cautious but also very specific and my progress was significantly quicker than with the first leg. Over the next few months, I continued to strengthen and advanced to levels I had not even expected.
No other method of therapy seems to keep in mind the full range of inter-working parts of the body like MAT does. I was able to strengthen supporting muscles in very subtle ways that over time helped make my joint stable. Without such acute attention to the way my body works, I am certain that I would be saddled with injuries now stemming from overcompensation. Instead, I recovered fully and I am running again without any pain, something doctors told me that I would most likely have to let go of. I have returned for my 2-year follow up and my bones are in perfect health and I live without any nagging pain. Thank you for changing the trajectory of my athletic life.”

“In April 2010, I received prolotherapy injections (PRP) in my SI joint since I’ve been having issues for 3+ years. Although the injections helped to alleviate the pain, I knew I had to stabilize and strengthen the area if the injections would be a long term success. Much of my SI joint instability came from weak glutes and abductors. MAT was an effective solution for getting the weak muscles “firing” to stabilize the area. I have been feeling great in training and the isometric contractions I learned allow me to keep things in check.”

“While training for the Boston Marathon, I had a nagging hamstring pain and significantly reduced flexibility on the left side of my body. I was diagnosed with a common running problem that required simple strengthening exercise. I performed the exercises as suggested and did not see improvement. An active lifestyle is my livelihood and I knew that I couldn’t continue with marathons and triathlons without repairing my injury. That’s when I found Shawn True. Within the first session Shawn was able to identify the root causes of my pain using M.A.T. We spent three, hour-long sessions strengthening the weak/injured areas and now I have my flexibility back and can run pain-free.”

“We wanted to share our experiences with MAT. Our 13 year old was dealing with chronic back pain and random spasm over the last year and a half brought on by overuse as she is a competitive year round swimmer. We tried Chiropractic, had X-rays, even saw a pediatric orthopedic doctor who all confirmed nothing broken. Sadly she had to quit swimming as that seemed our only choice and hope of her healing. Even though not swimming, and doing daily stretches, she continued to have chronic pain.
Through MAT, We learned a lot about muscular imbalanceand how weaker muscles can lead to instability elsewhere in the body. We discovered weak muscles in one hip were the main culprit. Through several sessions and continued daily work with MAT exercises, I am happy to report Gabby is back at swim and has slowly worked her way back to normal practice. She continues to be spasm and pain free in the pool and out. This technique has been a God send. It really just makes sense and the results speak for themselves!”
— Jen and Gabby Verdoni
“I have had chronic knee pain for many years. I have tried many different techniques (surgery, physical therapy, acupuncture, and more) to “get by,” so that I can keep on running. Some have helped, but usually for just a short span of time before the pain increases again. With MAT… I have already noticed a significant decrease in knee pain almost to the point of no pain. In addition I have a much greater range of motion with my joints as well as increased strength.”

“I’m a competitive swimmer who was diagnosed with tendinosis in my shoulder last year. I was getting so frustrated after trying so many attempts to heal my injury. Physical therapy helped but was not the answer for me, and rest wasn’t helping either. After a few MAT sessions my body was back in balance and I felt as good as new. I am now back in the water and I’m so thankful for discovering Activation Fitness.”

“When I first came to see Steve in mid-April 2012, I could barely run 2 miles without experiencing major knee pain. He interviewed me about my running, provided suggestions about how to do things differently and made adjustments using MAT. I credit you for giving me the treatment that I needed. After following your recommendations I was running pain free. I credit you with changing every misconception I ever had about running. Especially your recommendations about my technique and the type of shoes I was using. I’ve switched completely to minimal trail running shoes and a natural running technique.”
I also achieved my goal of setting a personal record for the 2012 Chicago Marathon. Not only did I get a PR, but I smashed my old record from 2010 by almost 17 minutes.”

“I’m a swimmer at Glenbrook North. Each of the past three seasons I started having pain in both shoulders. I tried doing traditional therapy and did not see much improvement. Each year a few sessions of Muscle Activation helped me improve my flexibility and strength in and out of the water. I would go back to swimming without the pain and able to perform at my best for the rest of the season.”

“Shawn and the MAT techniques helped our cross country program tremendously this fall. He helped our athletes understand their mechanics, explained the reason for injuries, and provided valuable treatment. We were able to sustain high level of training and competition. “I came to Steve with a pretty severe plantar fasciitis case to the point where I could not run at my kids soccer practices. Was pain every step. After 6 sessions, the pain has gone away, my flexibility and my athleticism has come back. Now I look forward to this spring and being able to help with the soccer team again and run a 5K again soon.”

“I compete in triathlons and mountain races and stay very healthy and for the most part, injury free. After competing in a mountain race in Alaska I had injured my quad and could not even bend my knee 90 degrees. I had no idea what I was going to do to help myself so I could continue training for my Half-Iron man that was coming up in a few weeks. Remember I could not even bend my knee 90 degrees and at the end of the ONE session I could bring my heel all the way to my butt without pain. Thanks to Shawn I was able to continue my training and completed my Half-Iron man finishing 6th in my age group! His expertise and expansive knowledge of the body and mechanics make me comfortable to refer clients of mine to him for help.”

“Steve has had a profound impact on my thinking and activities for my health. He was an eye-opening experience after 25 years of static stretching, which had not produced results. He was the entire reason I started going barefoot more often, and now wear the thinnest possible shoes (after wearing orthotics since I was 10), thus allowing my feet to go through a full range of motion. No more big clunky shoes, thank you Steve. I recommend Steve and Activation Fitness highly.”

Mind / Body Methods Testimonials “As a yoga teacher, I have been fascinated with MAT. I teach balance and alignment. In order to achieve that one needs to strengthen some muscles and loosen others. Most people want to stretch but they forget that the opposite muscle needs to strengthen. MAT helps with finding the muscles that need to strengthen. I have sent many students to Activation Fitness and they have found the help they needed. I think MAT technique is terrific.”— Wendy SadlerYoga Instructor, Practicing since 1975, Teaching since 1998
“My feet were the motivation for giving MAT a try. The heels had become so tender over the years that to walk was painful. Cyndi Burman worked tenaciously over several sessions on the many muscles/joints within each foot, the muscular alignment of my hips/legs to my feet and balance between both sides. I also became more cognizant of how I placed my feet when I walk and practice yoga. Gradually the tenderness subsided to where I am today, 12 months later. My feet are no longer an issue. I have made the decision to continue to work with Cyndi on other parts of my body because I believe that MAT is important to my graceful aging process. The muscles sometimes need to be reminded of how they connect to and interact with each other and their respective bones. MAT has become an important part of the overall health plan to keep me strong and happy in my active life style.”— Katherine Nagler“After nearly one year of shoulder pain, I felt frustrated because traditional physical therapy was not helping anymore. I even had arthroscopic surgery to diagnose what the problem was; only to discover that my injury was permanent and could not be fixed surgically (damaged cartilage). I felt like nothing would ever help my pain and allow me to exercise the way I used to. My doctor suggested I try MAT to see if it would help. Not only did it help more than anything I had tried so far, but I actually feel that with time and continued strengthening, I will likely get to a point where I will be virtually pain free. MAT helped determine why the injury happened in the first place. I am able to do yoga again with some minor modifications. Yoga was a big part of my life before, but also contributed to my injury. MAT has helped me understand my limitations and strengthen my weaknesses so I can practice yoga safely again!”— Elaine Sobel |

“If you love Racquet Sports as much as I do, then you will want to make sure your body is ready to handle the years of wear and tear. I had knee pain about a year ago that would act up after just one paddle match. Now I can play a tournament without any pain while playing or during the days after. “Activation Fitness has been a big help in rehabbing my year long bout of elbow tendonitis. I had tried a number of different potential solutions, but never made continued progress until I took advantage of Muscle Activation Techniques and strengthening at Activation Fitness. They discovered my shoulder and core mechanics were out of balance. After working on these weaknesses, my elbow was able to heal and I have been back to playing tennis pain free (even serving!) for the last few months.”

“My MAT specialist at Activation Fitness found the cause of my hip pain right away. Even though my injury and pain were on the left side, he showed me that my weaknesses (and the cause) were almost all on the right side! I was moving great, playing tennis and pain free after just a few sessions. I was frustrated with my injury and fearful this would be a chronic issue limiting my ability to play tennis. I would highly recommend scheduling an evaluation if you are suffering from muscle or joint pain.”

“As an avid tennis player all my life, now a 63 year old grandmother, I practice tennis four hours a day while still working as a flight attendant. All of this left me sore, limping and struggling with inflammation. MAT and Activation Fitness helped reverse this and regain the necessary speed and agility to stay in the game at a high level. My feet were a common problem area. Working on my weak links and following your advice to change my footwear helped me achieve a life long tennis goal of competing in several pro tour events in the past few years, virtually pain free. You have my sincere appreciation!”

“I started working with Gina the same week X-rays taken by my chiropractor showed that my spine was extremely misaligned. Day after day, I was experiencing pain in my neck and a general discomfort in my back. I woke up most mornings stiff and achy. These misalignments created pressure and irritation on the various nerves in my spine and I was suffering a wide range of symptoms. The consensus was that my condition was caused by eight to ten hours a day at my desk in front of the computer screen. I was feeling pretty depressed about my situation. Gina took a thoughtful approach to my sad state of affairs. After working with Gina for two months, as well as my chiropractor, my spine was greatly improved. The second set of X-rays showed far better alignment. My chiropractor commented that the improvement was much more rapid than with his average patient. I believe that result is directly related to working out with Gina and her commitment to my well-being. Her workouts are creative, challenging and motivating. Overall, I’m stronger and very encouraged by the change in my physical condition.”— Kerri
“From a young age, when I was involved in competitive gymnastics, to my current physical activity of running, pilates and yoga practice, I am familiar with injury and the aches and pains of daily living. Several years ago when I saw a chiropractor for the first time, he took x-rays of my back and asked if I had ever suffered a spinal fracture! My more recent back injury was severe enough to halt all physical activity and seek medical attention. At that time x-rays showed a stage 4 spondylolithesis of L4 and L5 and instablility in flexion and extension of my spine. It was suggested by Shawn True that I get an MRI and make an appointment to see a neurosurgeon. Seeking an alternative to surgery, I began work with Shawn using the M.A.T. technique of reactivating long-dormant muscles to provide a more stable foundation in my spine. I now realize that stabilization begins with the reactivation of muscles designed to do the job of stabilization, instead of just “strengthening” muscles arbitrarily where the already strong muscles get stronger and the weak stay weak. After working with MAT techniques for the past 5 months, a more recent set of x-rays showed the spondylolithesis at a stage of 1.5 and Dr. Shea (neurosurgeon) recommended no surgery at this time. While running may not be in my future, I am reintroducing lost activities that I love and enjoying a stable, pain-free back!”— Karen Koval
“Shawn True spoke to the staff at the Personal Training studio where I train. The second I heard what he had to say, it made sense to me. I had been having nagging low back aching for months and with Shawn’s consistent attention and expertise, I can say the ache has subsided. In addition, Shawn is kind, energetic, and possesses a high emotional intelligence. Feeling well, body and mind is very important to me and Shawn supports that for his clients.”— Susan NewmanCertified Personal Trainer“Impending osteopenia and fear of heart disease prompted me to begin working out about 10 years ago. I saw results in weight loss and my bone density improved, but I often struggled with motivation. I also began spinning but suffered upper back pain. Running and some machines became out of the question due to knee and lower back/hip pain as well. Other trainers and a physical therapist told me that running, the treadmill, and open chained machines would aggravate my problems more. Still I continued my weekly regiment. Then I met Steve Dam about two years into this process. Steve changed my entire attitude about fitness. It became more about strengthening my body and understanding what I COULD do as long as it was done properly. Fitness became my passion and I became leaner and stronger and looked forward to training.Steve is a knowledgeable, forthright and caring person. His training style and MAT skills are a combination that truly work. I would enthusiastically recommend training and doing MAT at Activation Fitness, if you want to feel strong and overcome physical limitations that have held you back.”— Linda GoldSmall Business Executive“In April 2010, I received prolotherapy injections (PRP) in my SI joint since I’ve been having issues for 3+ years. Although the injections helped to alleviate the pain, I knew I had to stabilize and strengthen the area if the injections would be a long term success. Much of my SI joint instability came from weak glutes and abductors. MAT was an effective solution for getting the weak muscles “firing” to stabilize the area. I have been feeling great in training and the isometric contractions I learned allow me to keep things in check.”— Renne Richards Groff5 x Team USA member Triathlon and DuathlonAll American2004 Duathlon World Champ (long course |
Foot and Knee Testimonials
“I had a complex injury and went the doctor route and through physical therapy but I kept complaining of nagging pain and the feeling that something just wasn’t working right in my lower leg. The doctors looked at me like I was nuts and although my physical therapist was great, he was stumped too! I did my research and found MAT therapy. What an eye-opening experience! After my second visit I was convinced I had found my answers. And after only four visits, I turned the corner in my recovery and I’m doing things that I thought I might not ever do again! I can’t believe how well it worked! …. MAT is definitely is the next generation for injury rehab.”— Debbie Syler
“I play Division I college soccer although after having ACL surgery on both my knees, I played in considerable pain. My mom told me about Shawn so I went to see him. This past fall was the first season in years that I have played pain free. Thanks, Shawn!”— Laura Murphy
“A year ago I developed plantar fasciitis in my heel. I was put in orthotics and they did help the plantar fasciits. Unfortunately because they changed my gait, I developed knee problems a year later. I had orthopedic surgery and it helped very little. Now after having MAT with Steve for 4 sessions, for the first time in 6 months I am able to do the elliptical, walk, and lift weights again. I was using the orthotics the entire day but now do not use them at all and my foot still feels great. I no longer have the daily pain and I am sleeping good again!”— Laurie Cook
“I started coming to Activation Fitness when I had some nagging knee pain. I wanted to get ready for a ski trip and searched on line for something effective and non-invasive. After just a few sessions of MAT, my knees were pain free. It really was a God send. He is finally starting to sleep better at night and feeling optimistic again about the golf season coming up!— Arpie Petkus
“I came to Steve with a pretty severe plantar fasciitis case to the point where I could not run at my kids soccer practices. Was pain every step. After 6 sessions, the pain has gone away, my flexibility and my athleticism has come back. Now I look forward to this spring and being able to help with the soccer team again and run a 5K again soon.”— Kevin MacLean
“I had double knee surgery almost 2 years ago. I had a short stint of physical therapy. When I finished that, my doctor recommended I go to Activation Fitness. He said I would strengthen the areas around the injury with a knowledgeable trainer using strength training and MAT. I am now very much on the road to recovery and my experience here has been perfect. I am in my 50’s but still very active playing golf and skiing. Activation Fitness has kept me doing the things I love and feeling great. I highly recommend it.”— David Olson

Shoulder, Neck and Upper Back Testimonials “I am a professional violinist and sustained an injury almost 20 years ago to my neck that caused continuous pain. I am able to practice, teach and workout on a regular basis and even play competitive tennis-things I could never have achieved together prior to Activation Fitness.”— Deb PonkoProfessional Violist
Overall, I’m stronger and very encouraged by the change in my physical condition.”
